Black Diamond Vs Black Moissanite – Do You Know The Gem?

Black diamond Vs Black Moissanite, Is Moissanite a new term to you?

Most geologists know what it is. So if you are still unaware of what it is, we are going to tell you it in this Blog.

Can you tell which one below is a real diamond and which one is moissanite?

which one is moissanite?

The first picture is a Natural Black diamond and the second one is a Synthetic Black Moissanite

Black moissanite is just too perfect because most of it is synthetic in nature. But as black diamonds are earth mined, they are not perfect.

The black diamond is not free from defects like gray-white-brown and other color inclusions. Explore Real Natural Black diamonds.

Very rare real black diamonds are perfectly black in color and that is the reason why they are sold at huge prices similar to certified white diamonds.

Moissanite is simply a man-made Diamond Look-A-Like!

The first time I ever came across a Moissanite was about 8 years ago.

A customer brought in their “Diamond” Engagement Ring saying to fix it at our jewelry house.

Our professional team did a looping of the Ring carefully and tested the stone with a normal Diamond Tester. It tests as Diamond, but experts are not convinced.

He kept looking at it from all different angles, even upside down. The stone just didn’t look appropriate although the tester shows Red light with a Beep sound, Still, he is not convinced.

The optical properties were different, the color was off, and the way the stone handled light was odd. He presented the stone to other jewelers, which is followed by confusion, discussions, and opinions.

The result is here!

“This is NOT a Diamond!”

It was later determined that the stone in question was in fact, a Moissanite!

It wasn’t a real Diamond! but a synthetic fake thing, as 99.98% of all moissanite are synthetic in nature. When we showed the Black Diamond Vs Black Moissanite comparison charts and told the real truth about the stone, the customer looked really embarrassed.

After this, we convinced him using our in-depth knowledge about diamonds and also showed him the certification from the jeweler.

We have come a long way in testing any gem that looks like a black diamond. And we tell you for a fact that any gem can be sold as a natural black diamond. And if its selling price is priced at less than $50 per Carat or less, there is a big question mark about its integrity to be a natural black diamond (enhanced). You can get a natural black diamond 1-carat price as low as $100-200.

What is a Moissanite?

Moissanite is indeed a Natural, Genuine Stone that is so rare in Nature that only a few small pieces still exist. It was first discovered in Canyon Diablo in a Meteorite in 1893, by Dr. Henri Moissan, who at the time mistook the stone for a Diamond.

It is discovered later to be a new mineral similar to Diamonds, but at the same time, awfully different in many, many ways! Later it’s found that Moissanite is made in the lab. And so that is the reason Charles and Colvard start SIC (silicon carbide single crystal of the highest quality) to make the cut and polish Moissanite. You can explore diamond 4cs which is most important to find out about the real diamond.

Let’s get a couple of things straight about the Moissanite

The Moissanite is not a Diamond and not even a Diamond Alternative! Nor a brand name for a Diamond!

Moissanite is a Genuine Stone, but to this day it’s really rare, it’s next to impossible to find the natural moissanite (That’s where Created Moissanite steps in) Moissanite is made of Silicon Carbide. (Diamond is made of 100% pure Carbon.)

Moissanite on the Mohs Scale of Hardness is 9.25 (Natural Black Diamond is a 10. CZ is 9). 99.9% of the moissanite that sells in any jewelry store is synthetic in nature.

Moissanites were often identified as treated black diamonds by Electronic diamond testers. This causes concern to consumers who thought they had black diamonds.

If the tester is designed to separate the diamond from moissanite based on electric conductivity, this can definitely happen. However, color-treated black diamonds become electrical conductive during the process that enhances their color.

As a result, jewelers sometimes mystify the color-treated stones.
